THE national government should govern municipal councils across the country.

Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar made this comment in a heated debate in Parliament yesterday over the delay in municipal council elections.

“The municipal councils come under the local government and the national government is responsible for establishing the local government,” Mrs Kumar said.

“This is the norm in all governments across the country.

“We don’t want municipal councils where they sweep things under the carpet, now we have FICAC where any involved in corruption is investigated, this is transparency.”

Mrs Kumar said they would try to carry out some sort of clean-up campaign within municipal councils before any decision was made.

She said a team from New Zealand would be visiting a country to study certain areas within the municipals that are in need of improvement.

Opposition Whip Lynda Tabuya said a lot of municipal councils had not submitted their financial reports over the last seven years.

‘’Sometimes when the Government is talking, it’s like they are just talking to themselves. We need good governance in our municipal councils,” Ms Tabuya said.

“They are like insane, they are trying the same thing but getting the same results, it is the right of ratepayers to have their own municipality elections.”
