FORMER Fiji 7s playmaker Amenoni Nasilasila has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for the rape of a young woman late last year.

Justice Daniel Goundar passed the sentence in the High Court in Lautoka fixing a non-parole period of six years.

Judge Goundar said Nasilasila’s status as a sports celebrity was not a mitigating factor in the offence of rape.

He added the victim was further subjected to victimisation by Nasilasila’s fans on social media.

Nasilasila was charged for raping a 24-year-old woman at Olosara, Sigatoka, on December 22, 2018.

Last month, Justice Goundar overturned the assessors unanimous opinion of not guilty and convicted the former sevens player of rape.
