National women’s football player Cema Nasau wishes her mum was alive to see her play.

The Labasa striker was in fine form over the past week after scooping the Golden Boot Award and Golden Ball Award during the Digicel Women’s Inter-District Championship.

The former Ba player scored nine goals in the tournament and impressed many people. But the one person she misses the most is her mum who passed away in 2009 due to an illness.

“When mum passed away, our father stepped in and took on the responsibility of looking after six children,” she said.

“I am grateful to my father for his never-ending support, being a farmer he managed to look after me and my siblings.”

Nasau hails from Koroqaqa in Ba and has maternal links to Yasawa. She is currently part of the Fiji women’s football national squad.

She spent her whole football career with Ba and made the switch to join Labasa this year.

She said hopes to make it to the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. National women’s coach Lisa Cole was impressed with Nasau’s performance.

“I was impressed with her in camp but it was great to see her with her team, she was a bit more comfortable there.

“She knows the players really well and I felt like her level or her qualities helped Labasa win the championship.

“She settles play, she is able to keep the ball and sometimes you see players kicking the ball forward and hoping someone is going to chase it down, but with her she can dribble forward, she can pass and combine to get in like what you saw in the last goal.”
