Sachida Nand has been awarded the vacant parliamentary seat in the Fijian Parliament after the recent resignation of the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa.
This was confirmed by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Suresh Chandra, in a statement issued this afternoon.
In the statement, Mr Chandra said the Electoral Commission held a meeting through the use of electronic medium today August 13, 2021, and have resolved the following:
- As per section 64(1) of the 2013 Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, Sachida Nand, candidate number 586, having secured 472 votes in the 2018 General Election is the highest-ranked out of the candidates of the FijiFirst who did not get elected to Parliament but is still available to serve.
- The Electoral Commission approves the awarding of the vacant parliamentary seat to Mr Sachida Nand.
Mr Nand is expected to be sworn into Parliament in the next sitting next week.
