Tevita Sokiveta has been living with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) for more than 15 years, but it failed to stop him from participating in sports events.

He participated in the Namosi Marathon last Saturday and finished the 10km race.

Soft-spoken Sokiveta said help from his family and friends kept him going.

“I was really small when I found out about this condition,” he said.

“There are three stages to RHD and I’m glad I have been able to keep it at mild. It is through looking after myself well, taking injections and medications on time, keeping fit and all.”

He also plays rugby.

“Nothing can stop you from achieving your goals if you have the will to do so. I was down for some time, but then I realised that my condition should be taken as an inspiration and not to demoralise me. It has been all smooth flowing for me since then and I thank those around me for helping me.”

Sokiveta has a part-time job and is able to live a normal life.

He encourages those affected by RHD to live a healthy and enjoyable life.
