PROLIFIC striker Rusiate Matarerega volleyed in a spectacular 40 yarder in the 47th minute to earn Jack’s Nadi a 1-0 victory against Tavua in the Vodafone Premier League match at Prince Charles Park yesterday.
Matarerega the son of former Nadi, Lautoka and national rep Watisoni Voli saw Tavua goalkeeper Jovilisi way out of his territory and lobbed the ball in which has been classed as one of the best goals of the season.
It has also maintained Matarerega’s top spot on the goal scorers list in the VPL as the race for the golden boot continues with only a couple of rounds remaining.
Nadi Football Association president Javed Ahmed said they defeated Tavua on the third attempt this season.
He said Tavua proved to be tough opponents.
“We lost to Tavua in the first round of the VPL and then in the Fiji FACT,” Ahmed said.
“Rusi’s (Matarerega) goal was a cracker. It is one of the best I have seen. The boys performed well especially in the midfield. We are happy with the result.”
The victory moves Nadi into third position on the VPL points table and in contention for Fiji’s second spot for the 2019 Oceania Football Confederation Champions League.
Nadi’s remaining fixture is against Suva while Ba which is the other team gunning for the OFC Champions League has two games remaining.
“There is a three-week break coming up and this will kill our momentum,” Ahmed said.
“We will try and push for that second OFC Champions League position and hopefully the other results fall in our favour.”
