Nabila villagers in Raviravi, Malolo, are still awaiting a response from the Government on their request for a sea wall.
Raviravi district spokesperson Sakeo Koroi told the Nadroga Provincial Council meeting this week, a team from the Ministry of Waterways had visited the village earlier this year to carry out a survey.
“Their team from the Sigatoka office advised us after the survey we would need to provide some materials to help with the construction,” Mr Koro said.
“We have been able to come up with the materials, but there has not been any response from the ministry.
“Until today, we are still waiting for them to come back to us on when the work will start.”
Mr Koro said the sea wall was an urgent need for the village.
“Seawater is taking away our shore. It’s coming even closer to some of the homes.
“We need the sea wall to protect the houses closest to the shore.
“Our people have seen the changing weather and we are seeing what climate change is doing to our villages.
“If we can do something to help protect our homes, then we should do it now.”
A representative from the Department of Waterways said the sea wall project for Nabila Village was part of their capital projects.
He said their team was currently working on a sea wall for Viseisei Village in Lautoka.
