Mudaliar rolls for bowls veteran title

VETERAN Kanda Sami Mudaliar is aiming to create history by becoming the oldest player to lift a bowling title in the country when he participates in the Victa Clark tournament at the Lautoka Bowling Club greens this weekend. At the age of 75 years Mudaliar is still going strong playing the sport that he loves daily. Mudaliar who won his first Victa Clark title in 1991 will use the home turf knowledge to his advantage.

Mudaliar said he was ready to give the younger bowlers a run for their money. “I hope to maintain my fitness and concentration on the game,” he said.

“Not many people my age are playing the sport in the country. Hopefully I can win the title for another time.”

Permal Satya, Victor Ramlu and Rajnesh Narayan are the hometown favourites. Lautoka Bowling Club secretary Ram Chandar said they expected a total of 32 players to participate in the two-day event.

Chandar said Maersk Shipping had come on board as the major sponsor.

“The entries will close on Friday,” he said.

“A lot of work will be done in the next few days to get the green into top shape. The players from Lautoka have been practising daily. They will face stiff competition from the Nadi and Sheraton members.”

Meanwhile, the Banana Cup competition will be played at the Suva Bowling Club next month.
