FijiFirst party member, Alvick Maharaj mocked the leadership of past government leaders and questioned their vision for Fiji, just one day after Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama apologised to all Fijians on the behaviour of all parliamentarians.
Responding to the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s maiden statement in Parliament yesterday, Mr Maharaj said the seed for success should have been planted 50 years ago for it to flourish today.
“Was it their vision, to ensure that we have brain-drain post-1987 coup to our neighbouring countries?” he said.
“Did they have the means to stop people from migrating overseas post-2000 coup or boldly telling the instigators of 2000 coup that the fearful, non-democratic event will push Fiji far back, instead some of them supported those coups for their own benefit.
“Did leaders prior to 2006 serve for the betterment of the nation or for betterment of themselves?”
“Look at some of those leaders today, they have even left Fiji for greener pastures, can we call them real sons and daughters of our nation? Mr Maharaj said harmony that existed between the major communities was thrashed to pieces when one community was instigated against other during and post 1987 and 2000 coup.
“Some elite citizens of the country were driving discrimination between major communities for their personal gain and to maintain political power.
“The love, bond and care, the Fijian communities share is unmatched in this world. It was the pillar of love, trust and equality between all communities that ensured the growth of our country was unprecedented before 1987, and that is exactly what Hon Prime minister is trying to bring back since 2006.
“This wasn’t the vision of the leaders prior to him nor was it the vision of the people who carried out the 2000 and 1987 coup, nor the political leader who supported these two coup.”
