Mothers living along Khalsa Rd in Newtown, Nasinu, are worried about their children’s health and safety.

Loata Qalo fears for the safety of her children every time they walk out the front door to play in the yard.

She said road conditions were so bad that drivers went off the road to avoid potholes and drove on what was supposed to be a footpath.

“I placed blocks near the edge of the road to prevent vehicles from coming too far off the road,” Ms Qalo said.

“I was afraid that my children would be hit by vehicles trying to avoid potholes, coming too close to my compound.”

Across the road, Paulina Mere said dust rising from potholes filled with gravel was causing her children to cough.

“Our children are always coughing and we think it’s from the dust,” Ms Mere said.

She also said on very dry days, dust would rise from the road when cars started moving in the morning until the curfew at night.

“For the past few days, it has been very dry and there is so much dust.”

Earlier this month, the Fiji Roads Authority stated that because of a shortage of bitumen, crews would be temporarily filling potholes with gravel.
