AS Fijians mark Mother’s Day today, mothers have been urged to continue being the pillars of survival and livelihood for their families, communities and the nation.
In her Mother’s Day message, Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa saluted mothers around the country for their contributions, saying they have continued to be the economic drivers in their homes.
Mrs Vuniwaqa wished mothers in the skilled and unskilled labour force well and commended them for their sacrifices and contributions.
“You are all making an impact on your communities because the betterment of your families will lead to a better community and the nation as a whole,” she said.
“To those that continue to shoulder on their duties despite the difficulties I say carry on because the future of your families, communities and nation relies heavily on your efforts.
“I salute the single mothers who are sole breadwinners in their homes for their brave efforts and the heroic things they do every day to ensure there is food on the table for their children and that their family continue to advance forward.
“The struggles of these mothers and their sacrifices speaks volumes of women’s roles in society on a daily basis as economic and development drivers.”
Mrs Vuniwaqa said during her tour to the North, they focused on providing better opportunities for women through gender empowerment in rural areas by introducing them with income generating projects.
“Developing the life of a single woman leads to the betterment of homes and communities. With this said, we recognise the role of men in development because they are partners with women in communities and I commend men’s support for their counterparts.
“Nothing can be achieved without joint effort and more can be achieved if we work together and for this reason I recognise the effort of men.
“I wish all mothers a very happy Mother’s Day and I hope that they enjoy their day.”
