Mothers are taking the lead role in providing early stimulation and responsive care to children, states the Fiji Multiple Indicator Cluster (MIC) Survey 2021 released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics.

The report stated 6000 households in Fiji were surveyed in March and April this year to collect information on the situation of children and women in Fiji.

The survey found 78.9 per cent of mothers took care of children compared with 44.6 per cent of men.

Data was collected on child health, nutrition and development, and it was found that 13.2 per cent of children under the age of five had inadequate supervision and were left with another child younger than 10 years or more.

The MIC survey found 82.9 per cent of children had some form of early child development, either through literacy-numeracy, physical or social-emotional learning where 23.7 per cent had three or more children’s books at home.

The report stated 74.5 per cent of children under the age of five had two or more types of toys.
