IT is very important to upgrade your studies, to keep abreast with ongoing changes in health and you have to be up to date with your skills in order to practice safely.

Jennifer Ypil said this after choosing to pursue her Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery from Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS) after working for 13 years as a nurse at Lautoka Hospital’s Maternity Unit

Ms Ypil who aims to complete her Postgraduate studies and practice midwifery said “Updating your skills is updating your knowledge, to provide a better and safer care to all the mothers.”

For the mother of two, going back to studies is a huge challenge but one that she firmly has set her sights on achieving.

She said the role midwives played during delivery of a newborn was a key motivator to pursue studies in this field.

She added, although going back to University after a while would be difficult, she was more excited to have the opportunity to further enhance her skills.

“There will be a lot of challenges when I am studying because now my family lives in Lautoka. I will just have to concentrate on studies during the weekdays and visit my family on the weekend,” she said.

She moved to Fiji with her family from Philippines when she was eight-years-old but went back to her motherland to attain her nursing degree in 2006.

Her long term plan is to further her studies and move into the academic field to impart her knowledge onto other aspiring nurses.

The 36-year-old said her journey would not have had been possible without her husband’s support who has told her to focus on studies while he would take care of their children.
