‘Mother language is a universal reality’

A PERSON’S mother language is a universal reality which exists and is heard and spoken by its speakers.

This was highlighted by the Assistant Minister for iTaukei Affair,  Selai Adimaitoga while officiating at the “International Mother Language Day celebrations” held at the GCC Complex rara today.

She said the day was proclaimed by UNESCO’s Genera Conference in November 1999.

“It originated as the international recognition of Language Movement Day, which has been commemorated in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) since 1952,” she said.

“A number of University of Dhaka students were killed by the Pakistani police and army in Dhaka during Bengali Language Movement protests.”

She adds the overall theme of the celebrations Noda i Vosa, Keda i Tovo, Keda i Vaqa explained the concept of compassion.
