MOST villages in Fiji’s 14 provinces do not have proper sanitation, says permanent secretary for iTaukei Affairs Meleti Bainimarama.

Speaking at the Serua Provincial Council meeting in Navua this week, he said this was discovered during the ministry’s village profiling exercise.

“Village profiling is actually data base information for villages, right now we have completed 98 per cent of villages across the country and we are left with a few,” he said.

“Most of the villages don’t have proper sanitation.

“This is a concern for Government. Mr Bainimarama said information derived from the profiling would help identify key priority areas for development in the 14 provinces via a cabinet paper.

He said they would be able to identify the best ways to tackle development issues highlighted during provincial council meetings and Government would be better advised on how to utilise the national budget.

Mr Bainimarama said also of serious concern was the erosion and loss of indigenous knowledge, skills and traditions.
