THE most identified victims of human trafficking are women, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime 2018 Global Report on Trafficking in Persons.

Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Minister Mereseini Vuniwaqa says while men are also susceptible to being trafficked for the purpose of forced labour, statistics reveal that children and women are more vulnerable than male adults.

She said for women and girls it was worse because apart from the demand for their labour, they were also exploited sexually.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said women and girls made up 72 per cent of all known human trafficking victims worldwide.

She said adult women constituted 49 per cent of the total number of trafficked people, and 23 per cent of child victims were young girls.
