WHILE Fiji continues to phase out hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), more needs to be done to counter efforts in protecting the environment and the ozone layer, says Fiji’s Minister for Environment Dr Mahedra Reddy.

Addressing a stakeholder meeting on Fiji’s Roadmap to hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) Phase-out and Transition to Low GWP (Global Warming in Nadi, Dr Reddy said: “We have phased out CFCs, carbon tetrachloride, pure halons and put a restriction on non- quarantine use of Methyl bromide and HCFCs while the Fijian Government over the years, has worked together with UN Environment, the Multilateral Fund and UNDP in the implementation of the Montreal Protocol at the national level.”

“Phasing out ODS as scheduled under the Montreal Protocol has been a national priority and will continue to be a priority for Ministry of Waterways and Environment.

“Fiji continues to be committed in the phasing out of hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) by 2030.”

Attended by stakeholders from the various sectors who deal with such products, Dr Reddy reaffirmed the collaboration to better inform and raise awareness on the current work done in the management of refrigerants, and be updated on plans and policies in place for a ¬smoother transition to alternatives low GWP when HCFC is phased out.

“Not all is over yet. More needs to be done and events like this mark the continuous effort we are putting in place to safeguard the ozone layer and environment as a whole. Over the last decade, we have seen an effective introduction of environmentally friendly alternatives,” he added.
