MINISTER for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy says it is not right for people to play around with floodgates because it is government’s property.
Dr Reddy made this comment while responding to a question by Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavu in Parliament yesterday.
Mr Bulitavu, in his supplementary question, said there were conflicts of interest between farmers in regards to floodgates and other issues and asked if the drainage board was monitoring those issues.
Dr Reddy said there was still a need for more awareness to be carried on such issues.
“All we need to do is to create more awareness and inform people not to play around with floodgates which are government’s property,” he said.
Dr Reddy said repairing of floodgates was too expensive.
“This issues have been reported to us, unfortunately, we cannot have a person sitting 24/7 on each of the floodgate,” he said.
