THE Ministry of Local Government, Housing and Community Development is looking to digitalise its services to meet the demands and interests of various stakeholders.

In addressing the Global Ministerial Virtual Conference, Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development Premila Kumar said one of the undertakings under the broader digitalisation program was to design, develop and implement a My Council App which will look after enhanced functionality and services of municipal councils.

“The transformation will bring about reforms in the ICT structure at the ministry and the 13 municipal councils,” she said.

Mrs Kumar said this included the introduction of online submissions and approvals of construction permits by the councils to promote a green economy.

“This convenient method would ensure we have more appropriate buildings around us that will enhance Fiji’s towns and cities.”

She said the ministry’s Department of Town and Country Planning was also in the process of reviewing the Town Planning Act 1978.

“We want to make this a modern legislation that will guide our future building developments and ensure we have towns and cities that are safe, clean and resilient.”

The conference, titled Knowledge and Innovation to transform the World’s Cities was convened by United Nations Human Settlements Programme and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
