THE Education Ministry will soon conduct an audit to find out if schools have an excess of teachers.

In a circular to heads of schools on September 27, Education Ministry permanent secretary Alison Burchell said there had also been cases of teachers being allocated to classrooms which had no students to cases where teachers had less teaching loads.

She said the ministry was in the process of asking school heads if they had extra teachers at their schools.

“A review of the staffing numbers in the system has identified some instances where teachers have been allocated to classes with no students or only a small number of students and in other instances where teachers have not been allocated any teaching load or only a small teaching load,” Ms Burchell said.

The ministry said it was the responsibility of school heads to see that teachers were “fully utilised”.

“Retaining excess teachers is not acceptable. We will soon carry out an audit in all schools and will expect a full explanation of any situations where a school has excess teachers which has not been reported.”
