Public consultations will be held across the country to gather views on the draft informal settlement lot allocation policy.

Speaking at a news conference in Suva yesterday, Housing Minister Premila Kumar said the policy was crucial to establish a fair system to assist those who were in the lower income bracket.

She said the ministry was working on the upgrade and formalisation of several informal settlements, and upon completion 99-year leases would be issued.

She said the policy would address issues such as the entitlement for lots, price of lots, government subsidy levels and restrictions on sale of subsidised lots.

She said the policy was discussed at Cabinet level and with the feedback from the public consultations, the final policy was expected to be tabled for Cabinet decision in January 2021.
