PLEASE present yourself to  the nearest medical centre if you have recently travelled and have a fever, cough, shortness of breath and other cold or flu-like symptoms.

This was the word from Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

He said while Government, through the Health Ministry and other stakeholders, was doing its best to ensure the virus did not enter the country — the onus was on people who had recently travelled to present themselves if they displayed flu-like symptoms.

In a press statement issued recently, the Health Ministry said people who had flu-like symptoms would not necessarily have the virus.

Because of the frequency and interconnectedness of air and sea travel, it was difficult to prevent the spread of the virus.

The ministry said it was important for travellers with flu-like symptoms to advise
their doctor of their recent travel activity and to also advise the health facility ahead of time so health workers were made aware of symptoms before they presented themselves for diagnosis.

The Health Ministry said there was no vaccine against coronavirus but advised Fijians to practise good hygiene measures:

• Cover your mouth and nose with tissue, sleeve, or elbow when coughing or sneezing.
• Throw used tissue into a bin that can be closed after use.
• Clean hands after coughing and sneezing and when caring for the sick.
• Frequently clean hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
• Avoid contact with persons with fl u-like symptoms
