Fiji’s Minister for National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu says the team at the National Disaster Management Office is pleased with the progress so far, a week after floods destroyed farms and wreaked havoc in many homes around the country.

He said this in his recent tour and distribution of food in certain evacuation centres in the West yesterday.

“We at NDMO are quite pleased with the progress so far and we wish to acknowledge all agencies, community leaders and all stakeholders,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“As we speak today, we have about 148 evacuation centres still active, 4000-plus people and 104 average households in evacuation centres majority being in the West, the central and the north.

“ Those in evacuation centre have been provided rations to sustain and help them in doing minor work before they get back to their communities.”

He adds the restoration of essential services to affected communities continues to be a priority.
