The Fiji Meteorological Services has issued the Tropical Cyclone Seasonal Outlook for November 2023 to April 2024 and predicted at least two or three cyclones is likely to pass through Fiji’s exclusive economic zone.

Of these, one to two cyclones could be Category three or stronger. Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Minister Sakiasi Ditoka told the academic session of the 2023 National Disaster Awareness Week (NDAW) in Suva there was an equal risk of tropical cyclones affecting any part of Fiji during the season.

“I wish to stress again the importance of preparedness,” Mr Ditoka said.

“Although the tropical cyclones and their associated hazards impact our nation, more importantly we must know what to do when it happens.”

The session holds a pivotal role in the overall agenda leading up to the two-day main event, the 2023 NDAW, which is scheduled to begin next week from October 17-18.

It serves as a foundation, offering essential knowledge and insights to our local and regional participants who are gearing up to take part in the exercises planned for this year’s NDAW.

“The NDAW hopes to address the destructive power or hazards, in other words, stop them from turning into disasters through careful and coordinated proactive planning and preparedness designed to reduce people’s exposure and vulnerability.

“In other words, we are hoping to stop the sudden onset of earthquakes and tsunami hazards from turning into disasters.”
