Mill suffers extensive damage

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) says the Rarawai mill in Ba suffered extensive damage when floodwaters associated with Tropical Cyclone Josie swept through the factory on Sunday.

In a statement issued yesterday, mill manager Taito Kafoa said Rarawai was inundated with floodwaters for about 18 hours and low-lying machinery such as electric motors, pumps, transformers and cables had been completely submerged resulting in damage.

Mr Kafoa said based on an evaluation of silt deposits and height of the water, this flood was similar to that experienced in 2012.

“The team is currently engaged in cleaning pumps and motors as well as other low-lying machines that were flooded and covered in silt,” he said.

“We are also doing a maintenance check following the clean-up, to determine whether equipments are operational.”

Mr Kafoa added that the mill does not have running water because the main water pipe supplying the mill was partly washed away and staff members were being supplied drinking water in the factory.

FSC CEO Graham Clark said the floods were an “unfortunate” event.
