Mill downtime affects crushing

The Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) Lautoka mill recorded 23 hours of mechanical stoppages caused by problems encountered in the front end of the powerhouse.

In its latest weekly crushing update, FSC stated while the problem was rectified within the week, outside stops of three hours were directly associated with rain which brought relief after a long dry spell.

The Lautoka mill continued to crush more than 30,000 tonnes of cane per week and recorded a 30,138 tonne crush for the past week while the Rarawai mill crushed 27,018 tonnes and Labasa crushed 25,750.

Lautoka has the weekly capacity to crush 35,000 tonnes of cane.

“The decline in cane quality continues to be impacted by dry weather, high temperature, high extraneous matter (20 per cent) coming in with mechanically harvested cane and the per cent burnt cane rising to 76.5 per cent,” stated FSC.

“Chemical usage to protect sugar quality has been at an all-time high this season due to inferior cane quality.

“For the period ending September 15, 2020, a total of 964,340 tonnes of cane had been crushed by the three sugar mills.”

Meanwhile, the second bulk molasses shipment of 36,000 tonnes will begin loading from the Malau terminal in Labasa this weekend and is expected to depart Fiji by month-end.

Bulk sugar exports for 2020 will continue in September with the arrival of a bulk vessel to load 30,000 tonnes of raw sugar for export to the United Kingdom.
