NEW methods are being used to circulate drugs in Fiji and its entry into the country is also expanding.

Speaking at a Narcotics workshop, Assistant Commissioner of Police Internal Affairs Mr Tevita Waqabaca stressed that the Pacific was no longer free from the harmful effects of drugs.

He also urged the law enforcement agencies to be one step ahead of the culprits as lives of Fijians were at stake.

“I would like to thank the UNDOC for creating awareness and dialogue with all key stakeholders on the best way forward in the fight against drugs. The drug market is diversifying and manufactures and dealers are becoming more innovative trying to find ways to evade the long arm of the law,” Mr Waqabaca said.

Regina Rohrbach of UNDOC said the three day workshop aims to have a very thorough overview of where the International Drug Framework stands, what the provisions are, best practices implemented overseas and then identify how the stakeholders can make those provisions useful to the drug strategy of Fiji.

“Only through international cooperation that we help address and combat the world drug problem,” Mrs Rohrbach said.

The workshop was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Defence and National Security and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC).
