The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has cancelled its annual conference for this year.
This was the word from church president the Rev Dr Epineri Vakadewavosa.
“We are doing this because of the difficult situation that the country and our members are going through,” he said.
“These are very tough times and the financial, psychological and emotional challenges that Tropical Cyclone Harold and COVID-19 have had on our community is quite significant.
“Many people are struggling, they have lost jobs, are on reduced hours and income, and we are very mindful of this.
“Life is becoming more and more difficult due to the economic and social challenges brought about by COVID-19 and TC Harold and we are very aware of the situation out there.
“When things normalise, the Methodist Church will hold its annual conference but for this year, we have made the decision to cancel it.”
Dr Vakadewavosa said the church had strategies and institutions in place to address the needs of those severely affected by COVID-19 and TC Harold.
He said issues faced by families were brought up at leaders meetings and these are raised to the divisional superintendents and the church stepped in to meet the needs of the faithful and those in their community.
“We are our brothers’ keeper and it’s an issue that crosses boundaries — so regardless of whether people in the community are Muslim or Hindu, we do our best to reach out and assist.”
The Methodist Church Annual Conference is traditionally held in August each year.
