Medical practitioner pleads not guilty to rape charges

A 66-YEAR-OLD medical practitioner, who is charged with seven counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault will have his trial starting on August 12, 2019.
The accused had pleaded not guilty for all the counts before High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar.
The accused is alleged to have raped and sexually assaulted his sister-in-law on June 28, in Nasinu.
State lawyer Swastika Sharma informed the court that she will not be relying on the accused’s caution interview statement.
She adds that the accused has alleged that he was assaulted by police officers at the scene.
Ms Sharma said she is not confirming if they will be calling police officers as state witnesses.
Justice Goundar has extended the accused’s bail and has adjourned the matter to May 1, 2019.
