GRADUATING with a Masters of Business Administration at 49 is no mean feat.

And it is even more of a challenge if you have 10 school-aged children under your care.

And that responsibility is in addition to running a newsroom of six journalists, covering a big chunk of Viti Levu – from Sigatoka to Rakiraki.

When Fiji Times West Bureau Chief Margaret Wise heard her name being called out at the University of the South Pacific graduation ceremony today, she was emotional.

Earning her MBA was the culmination of three years of sacrifice, hard work, late nights and tears.

“I would never have made it but for the grace of God,” Wise said with conviction.

“And also the huge support from The Fiji Times, my family and members of the Lautoka Wesley City Mission.”

Wise said if there was one thing she wanted to highlight from her experience, it was perseverance.

“To all the mums who gave up their passion or dream to pursue higher education for their children, I urge you to go back to school.

“If you are given the opportunity, grab it and go for it.

“It won’t be easy but every challenge and sacrifice you make will be worth it.

“And USP is a great place to do it because it caters for working men and women – allowing you to pursue your studies after work and on Saturdays.”

Fiji Times Editor-in-Chief Fred Wesley said what Wise achieved today was not easy.

“As a newsroom, we would like to congratulate Margaret for such a great achievement,” Wesley said.

“It takes a lot of sacrifices and she has worked very very hard to achieve what she has achieved today.

“I must also take this opportunity to acknowledge other members of The Fiji Times team who have made the effort to pursue their educational interests and aspirations, making sacrifices along the way to achieve their dreams.”
