Mawi focuses on learning more from RWC trip

LOOSEHEAD prop Eroni Mawi has a lot to learn at the upcoming Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Mawi is one of the few local players who have made the 31-member squad for the RWC for the first time.

He is a former Lelean Memorial School Deans trophy winning captain.

Mawi, who was also part of the Fijian Drua squad for the past two years, said the RWC was a different campaign.

He said it would be a lot of learning for him.

“There are some similarities with the National Rugby Championship and the RWC but we have to mix with the senior players,” Mawi said.

“I have been learning a lot from the overseas-based players and I really look up to them. There are pressures sometimes but not too much.

“I like to be challenged and it makes me feel confident in my rugby career moving forward.”

Mawi hails from Tovu, Totoya, in the Lau group and is classed as one of the rising stars of Fiji rugby.

He said it was a great honour to be chosen for the RWC.

“Through the guidance of the Lord, I’m here,” Mawi said.

“It was a hard challenge to fight for a spot. I’m grateful that the coaches had faith in me and have given me the chance to represent the country.

“It really means a lot especially for my family who have been supporting me. For me being young and one of the few local boys is an honour.

“My inclusion has boosted the chance of the local players to try what they want to achieve in life. I’m looking forward to the challenges and the experience that will come my way.”
