Mates revive hockey

The Mates Hockey Club is keen to develop youths in the sport during its annual tournament which ends today. Mates Hockey Club is the oldest surviving club in Lautoka.

Tournament director Fergus Underwood said there will be prizemoney for the top placed teams teams.

Underwood said the players will also get consolation prizes.

“We will acknowledge the best goalkeeper, the best midfielder, the best defender, the best forward and also the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament with the highest goal scorer.”

Underwood said they were grateful to Medica Pacifica PTE Limited managing director Bhoo Gautam for his contribution.

“After the pandemic the hesitation was there by the local companies not to sponsor sports but we are glad that Medica Pacifica Pte Ltd came onboard.

“We have the likes of David O’Connor, James Sokora, Dinku Patel, the Lautoka Lloyd Smith and family, Albert Queet and family, Wallace Smith and family who have also supported this event.”

“After a two year lapse and 31 years of the tournament we have encouraged the teams to include young players who can participate.

“It is more like a development program inviting school students but at the same time we have to abide by the rules and regulations so these youngsters can enhance their future.”

Results: (Men) Ventures 7-3 Naidrodro, Marist 2-0 Rockefellers, Blue Star 0-0 Mates, Marist 3-1 Blue Star, Naidrodro 3-1 Rockefellers.(Women) Ventures 7-0 Blue Star, Marist 3-0 Fuglys.
