Maternity ward in need of a major upgrade: Tabuya

OPPOSITION whip Lynda Tabuya told Parliament last week that the CWM Hospital’s Maternity Ward was in need of a major upgrade.

She said she had firsthand experience of the overcrowding at the ward.

“There were actually five of us in the same room delivering and also they were lying in the passage, on both sides as we were wheeled from one room to another to receive the service,” she said

“So it is very real and we really got to look at this and allocate more funds especially at such a vulnerable time for both mother and child.”

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama clarified the $4 million allocation for the extension of CWM’s Maternity Unit was in fact for the construction of a new maternity hospital.

“This is not an old maternity unit that we are talking about, … this is a new maternity hospital.”
