THE taboo imposed on marine protected areas of Tavua Village, Malolo Island four years ago is benefiting villagers.

Village chief and Taukei Motu, Tubutubu Nailovolovo said the sea delicacies that had decreased in numbers before the ban were now thriving.

“Today we have witnessed the return of many of the fishes which we haven’t enjoyed for some years,” he said.

“We are so happy to see that they have slowly returned and this is such a huge relief especially for us elders because we now know that our future generation will be able to enjoy the seafood we are enjoying now.”

Mr Nailovolovo said there were no plans on lifting the taboo and villagers had voiced support to continue observing its extension.

“They have witnessed the benefits and have seen how the initiative is a win-win for everyone.”
