FIJI Airports partnered with Mamanuca Environment Society to launch its mangrove replanting program in Viseisei, Lautoka, over the weekend.

About 50 staff members of Fiji Airports were joined by MES conservationists to plant mangrove seedlings along the Viseisei foreshore.

Fiji Airports CEO Faiz Khan said the initiative was designed to help their staff learn and raise awareness on the importance of mangroves to Fiji.

“Our beautiful country is blessed with pristine environment,” he said.

“Mangroves play an important role in our tidal ecosystem in supporting marine and human lives. However, as with anywhere else — humans hinder the balance of this ecosystem through developments.

“Fiji Airports is committed to mangrove preservation and restoration.

“We have not set any targets yet — it is important that what we plant survives — for the long-term benefit to Fiji.

“We will learn from our experiences starting today here in Viseisei and then set quarterly targets for locations, number and types of mangroves we will be planting.”
