Manavesi Lockington says her late father, Allen, was “very brave to be able to see the pain so many needy families go through and not let it take away his joy”.

The Lautoka philanthropist and renowned Letters to the Editor contributor died on Monday after battling an illness.

“We knew dad was suffering and he didn’t want to be a burden being the person he was,” Ms Lockington said.

“We didn’t really know the extent of people suffering during COVID and dad was the one who would come home with these stories.

“He would return home with heart-breaking stories and would try his best to provide for these needy families. “Dad was strong and joyful and that is his legacy.”

The Lockington family indicted they did not really understand the impact of the work their father had on many people until his passing on Monday.

Ms Lockington shared how her father requested her to jot down his last contribution to the Letter to the Editor column from his hospital bed on January 20 where he considered a hot shower system for patients was needed.

“Our house feels so empty without dad.” Mr Lockington, 62, will be laid to rest at the Tavakubu Cemetery on Saturday after his home going service at the Girmit Centre.
