Man unfit to take a plea

A man was remanded in custody by the High Court in Suva yesterday for a psychiatric evaluation because he was deemed unfit to take a plea yesterday.

Tila Vakacegu Williams was produced before High Court judge Justice Gihan Kulatunga on charges of aggravated robbery and serious assault.

It was alleged that he robbed a supermarket in Raiwaqa and seriously assaulted a person in the process.

When the matter was last called, the plea could not be taken because it was deemed that he was not mentally fit to do so.

The court ordered that Mr Williams have psychiatric evaluation and care, facilitated by St Giles Hospital staff, while being held at the Suva Remand Centre.

When his bail application was called, a prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions said it was the third bail application Mr Williams was making in person and the state was objecting to bail on the grounds of his mental unfitness.

He was further remanded in custody.
