Man to appear in court for rape of niece now pregnant; man at large in separate incident

Police have charged a Labasa man for allegedly raping his niece whom he also impregnated, while the search continues for a man believed to have been a third suspect in the alleged rape of a young woman in a separate incident in Sigatoka.

The 37-year-old Labasa man will be produced in court today charged with raping his 12-year-old niece sometime in October last year and warned her not to tell anyoone.

Police said the victim had been staying with the accused and her grandmother since her parents passed away.

“The matter came to light when the victim complained of having a stomach ache and was taken to the Seaqaqa Health Station where the pregnancy was confirmed,” Police said.

The victim has been placed in the care of Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre staff.

In Sigatoka, two men are in police custody for allegedly raping a 16-year-old student yesterday.

Police have identified the suspects as a 32-year old farmer and 26-year old mechanic.

Police said the duo had allegedly offered to drop the victim home but instead took her to where the group was drinking alcohol and forced her to drink before the alleged offence was committed.

“The two suspects are in custody while the search continues for the third suspect.”
