A 22-year-old Lautoka man has been sentenced to two years behind bars after he was convicted of indecently assaulting a 15-year-old student at Koroipita Settlement in 2012.
According to the court, the victim was residing with her parents and siblings at Koroipita Settlement where the incident occurred.
Records showed the accused was living with the victim’s sister, who had a child with him.
In sentencing the accused, Justice Aruna Aluthge said the victim was particularly vulnerable.
He said she was emotionally disturbed as a result of the offence and had difficulty in reporting the matter to any relative because the accused was an influential man in the household.
He said the accused was supporting the victim’s family and lived with her sister and had exploited her vulnerability.
According to the court, the 22-year-old had shown little remorse by not admitting to the offence.
Justice Aluthge said he did not save the victim from giving evidence of a sexual nature which was a distasteful experience for her.
