Man given 2 years, 5 months sentence for arson

HIGH Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe today told a man who burned down his partner’s house that he did not find any appropriate reason to suspend his sentence.

The man – Navitalai Naivalu – was sentenced to two years and five months imprisonment.

Naivalu was charged with one count of arson.

The high court judge also highlighted that due to the crime, Naivalu’s partner and her two daughters lost their house and their belongings.

He said the defence counsel in this case had submitted his personal and family background thus he did not any mitigatory value in it because he had committed a crime against his own family.

Justice Rajasinghe said Naivalu had pleaded guilty at the early stage of the proceedings and stated that he was remorseful for committing the offence.
