FIFTY-year-old Joveci Roqiqi of Varoko Village in Ba collapsed and died while trying to secure his home at the height of Severe Tropical Cyclone Keni on Tuesday.

Mr Roqiqi was laying out cement blocks on the roof of his home in Naitamusu settlement about 9am before his untimely death.

His mother, Mereilisoni Nabaro says Mr Roqiqi’s youngest son still believes that his father is still alive.

“He was alone on the roof and had asked one of his brothers to help him with the cement blocks. When his brother came back down, he was still on top finishing up the work.

“We were waiting for him to come down but he never did,” Ms Nabaro said.

She said when a family member returned to check on the fisherman, he was lying unconscious on the roof.

“We brought him down and I checked his pulse, but I couldn’t feel anything.”

The family rushed Mr Roqiqi to the Ba Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police confirmed the death and said a post-mortem examination would be carried out.
