A 60-year-old grandfather is worried about losing his eyesight after he was injured by stones allegedly hurled by people at a bus in Wainibuka, Tailevu over the weekend.
He was among rugby supporters inside a bus returning from watching a rugby match in the Western Division.
When this newspaper arrived at Navatuyaba Village, Toga in Rewa yesterday, police were escorting Taniela Vuli to be questioned.
“We were returning from Garvey Park in Tavua, after watching the rugby match between Rewa and Nanukuloa when the incident happened,” he said.
“People started throwing stones and water at buses packed with Rewa supporters.
“There was a group of young boys by the road when we reached Naqia Village. They started throwing stones and it hit my eye,” he claimed. He said he was terrified by the incident.
“They are very disrespectful and I am trying to understand why they did that because it was Nanukuloa who lost to Rewa, but villagers from Wainibuka were the ones who attacked our buses.
“They targeted our buses when we did not do anything wrong to them. Other supporters in the bus were also hit by stones but were not injured.”
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said anyone with information regarding the incident was encouraged to come forward.
“A team will be visiting the individuals who had posted the information, however, no report has been lodged but will be determined following the visitation,” she said.
