A 55-YEAR-OLD man charged with unlawful possession of ammunition was denied bail by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Samuela Waqa, who was represented by Lautoka lawyer Iqbal Khan, appeared before Magistrate Asaga Bodaragama.

Mr Waqa was allegedly found in possession of 22 live ammunition during a police raid at his Suva home on March 9.

It is alleged that the ammunition was kept in a bag which was kept inside the house of the accused.

Police prosecutor Inspector Jitendra Singh filed full disclosures in court, and objected to bail on the grounds that the case was of public interest and that the offence was serious in nature.

Insp Singh said the accused had absconded bail previously and he was a person of a known character.

Defence lawyer Iqbal Khan applied for bail citing his client’s constitutional right and that he had been held in police custody for more than 48 hours.

Mr Khan said only the High Court could extend any accused person’s stay in police custody.

Mr Waqa will reappear in court on Monday.
