A MAN who raped his cousin’s girlfriend has been jailed for 12 years and five months by the High Court in Lautoka.
The father of five, who was earlier convicted of one count of sexual assault and one count of rape, committed the acts between July 11 and July 12, 2016.
The High Court heard the complainant and the 40-year-old man were neighbours.
The complainant was on her way from Ba to her village when she was approached by the rapist who was drinking alcohol with some others at the time.
The man told the complainant to wait and that he would accompany her home and later asked her to accompany him to his house for a drink.
The court heard that the complainant tried to escape and even screamed for help, but the rapist punched her and forcefully took her inside his house.
In passing sentence, High Court judge Justice Sunil Sharma told the rapist that he took advantage of the complainant’s vulnerability and as a result, the complainant had been traumatised by the incidents.
The rapist will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years behind bars.
