WORLD Rugby Sevens Series commentator Sean Maloney says Fiji is a goldmine in 7s rugby players.

He made the comment during the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament which ended at Sigatoka on Saturday.

Maloney feasted on some of Fiji’s best rugby 7s games in the four-day annual tourney which was played under humid and wet conditions.

“Fiji can quite easily pick a team from the Coral Coast 7s to play with trams in the series,” Maloney said.

“This is because of the abundance of players you have.”

Maloney said Fiji had a good chance of retaining the Hamilton 7s next weekend in New Zealand after Fiji Airways Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber named his national side on Friday.

“Gareth has a different squad but Fiji will still play the Fiji 7s style but with different players.

“You still have the same guy in the middle in Jerry Tuwai who, if I could watch in 40 games, I seriously would.

“This is because for me he is one of the best 7s players in the world. I love watching him go around players.

“Fiji has a good balance. We saw some good debutants and with the good mix in the team, it will be hard to go around players such as Kalione Nasoko, Vakurinabili, Paula Dranisinukula and Mesulame. It’s hard to go around them then there is Alasio Naduva.”

He said if the national side played well, Fiji could win the Hamilton 7s.

Fiji is pooled with Australia Wales and Argentina this weekend.
