Maivalenisau double sees Fiji through

The Digicel Fiji ‘Baby Bula Boys’ qualified for the semi-finals of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Under-17 Championship after defeating the Cook Islands 3-0 in the quarter-finals at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

Petero Maivalenisau proved to be the star of the fixture after scoring a double.

He scored the opener in injury time of the first spell. Delon Shankar put Fiji up by two goals in the 50th minute.

Maivalenisau scored his second goal two minutes in extra time of 90 minutes.

Fiji coach Sunil Kumar said they knew the match was going to be tough.

“Cook Islands was also vying for a spot in the semi-finals,” he said.

“They did not allow us to penetrate through their defence in the first half. We were lucky to get a goal towards the end of the first spell.

“At half time I asked the boys to keep more possession and to not panic. That is when we got that second goal.”

The national side needs a reach the final of the regional championship to qualify for the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup which will be played in Peru from November 10 to December 2.
