DO not underestimate the understanding and abilities of youths.

This was the message from chair of the parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights chairman, Alvick Maharaj, to villagers in Vuna, Taveuni, on Wednesday.

While conducting consultations on proposed amendments to electoral Bills, Vuna Village district rep Laisiasa Tuimouta asked why the age of voters had been reduced from 21 to 18 years.

Mr Tuimouta said the maturity age for youths was 21 and not 18. He said for that reason alone, the voting age should remain at 21.

In response, Mr Maharaj said youths were more than capable and had proved to have handled many successful projects in the past.

“Please don’t ever underestimate our youths because, even at the age of 18, they are more than capable and they can vote,” he said.
