THE Open Merit Review System should be introduced to municipal councils, says chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts Alvick Maharaj.

While speaking at the auditor-general’s report submissions for the Ba Town Council yesterday, he said OMRS was an effective way of finding the right people for the job.

He said review systems used by Government ministries ensured transparency and accountability.

“This system also ensures that during a recruitment process, we have five individuals that are from that particular ministry which will be permanent secretary’s and most importantly there will be an independent party in the panel,” he said.

“It’s a system that will bring about transparency and accountability and also ensure that we are finding the right people for the right positions.”

Opposition MP Mikaele Leawere added that a staff audit was needed to be carried for municipal council’s to find out if people were working in the right positions.

“There is a need for the staff to be qualified in their respective areas,” he said.

Ministry of Local Government representative Alipate Mataivilia said they would take the suggestion of the PAC on board.
