The ego and self-pride within members of the Social Democratic Liberal Party is responsible for the number of fractions within the political party, says FijiFirst party member Alvick Maharaj.

Responding to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s maiden statement in Parliament this week, Mr Maharaj said even though SODELPA was not in power, their hunger for power was evident.

Mr Maharaj said SODELPA could not even manage a party consisting of 21 members of Parliament.

“What will happen if they form government? Just imagine in the fight for power and supremacy, what will they do to this country,” Mr Maharaj said.

“The way they are destroying the party, they will for sure destroy the country, lots of talks and speeches, but what will be the end result, one ponders.

“Isn’t it true that some members of SODELPA were part of the Qarase-led SDL Government when they brought in blueprint?”

Mr Maharaj said the blueprint was a document that breached human rights, a document that suppressed the marginalised society of this nation.

“Wasn’t it part of the blueprint that above a certain level in public service, the position would be occupied by elite iTaukei community and these people would have been selected through nepotism and favouritism rather than open merit system.

“A system that was used by SVT government that was led by Sitiveni Rabuka.

“It was a long battle for honourable PM, and FijiFirst Government to clean this culture of nepotism and favouritism from the public sector.

“Wasn’t it the policy of SVT and SDL government to offer scholarships to students based on ethnicity, and race to sons and daughters of chiefs, and not for the fact that a particular student deserves the scholarship.

“I ask Fiji, do we want to give powers back in the hands of such people who will take Fiji back in ’90s on the pillars of nepotism, discrimination, favouritism, biases and partiality or do you want a government that believes in fairness, equality, trust and progress.”
