Rakiraki was lucky to escape with a 1-0 victory against Lami in the Digicel Senior League competition on Sunday at Penang Sangam High School grounds.

Gyaneshwar Raju fired in the winner in the first-half and the two sides battled for the reminder of the match, ending up with win for the western side.

“We were lucky to have won on Sunday as Lami proved to be a strong side,” said Rakiraki Football Association president Jay Krishnan.

The Rakiraki side played with 10 men for 25 minutes in the second-half after captain, Ronald Dutt was red-carded.

“This was our first win in the competition and the boys are happy with the victory.” Rakiraki plays Tailevu North this weekend.

“We had some key players missing such as Ronil Ram and Saimoni Nabogi who will return this weekend. “We know they are a strong side and our preparations will go towards beating them.”

Krishnan thanked the Rakiraki team supporters for turning up in numbers to cheer the side.

“We are seeing lot of support for the team and we hope it continues.”
